How Did It Go?

First Show at Morro Bay Wine Seller

Our first showcase at Morro Bay Wine Seller was a big success! Full lineup of top-notch musicians, room packed with appreciative listeners, and to quote Hoyt Axton, "some mighty fine wine." Joy to the world, indeed.

Susan Ritchie kicked off the night, although the sun was so bright she had to wear shades during her set. Percussionist Andrew Ricard sat in on the cajon drum. Susan played some upbeat bluesy originals, perhaps inspired by attending the Tedeschi Trucks Band concert over the weekend. Be sure to get her latest CD, "52".

Showcase host Steve Key was accompanied by Debra Windsong on the blues harp, opening with the seasonal original, "Get Ready for the Fall" and then Woody Guthrie's ode to the farm workers, "Pastures of Plenty", in honor of the Labor Day holiday. Their last two songs were actually two interpretations of one song, "I've Done Some Foolish Things," by local writer Craig Louis Dingman.

Appropriately, Craig himself followed. Debra stuck around, adding harp to the Kris Kristofferson songs Craig will be performing Sept. 9 at D'Anbino Cellars in Paso Robles. The Code Blues frontman showed off his new guitar, and kept the room charmed with his humorous banter and jazzy originals. "Baby Please Say No" is a hit waiting to happen.

Jim Conroy started off in a mellow mood, but mentioned that his friend Nancy Craig (who was there) told him he should play happy songs. Jim obliged, leading the audience in a sing-along, "Gotta Keep on Going". Jim has confirmed he will be our featured artist at MBWS on Monday Oct. 31, but he will not wear a costume.

All the way from Spain, the trio called Carbayo commanded the stage, with writer-vocalist-guitarist Alex Carbayo at the center. Percussion and lead guitar on a 12-string filled out their sound. High-energy ballads, driving guitar rhythms, catchy tunes. Carbayo featured songs from their nine-song album, "The Longlook Ride".

Closing out the show as our featured act, hVA added some punch to their vocal harmonies with Roy Donkin on fretless electric bass guitar. Stephanie Croff and Kyle Reilly continue to mesmerize with their duets. Hope they keep coming back, despite their recent move to San Francisco. The show ran overtime, finishing up around 9:30, with the room still full of happy listeners. Let's do this again -- how about next Monday?

Full Moon First Summer's Night

Your host Steve Key didn't play his usual opening set, but he did add harmonies to four songs in Ynana Rose's featured set, and had the gall to borrow Ynana's guitar and sing his minor-key reworking of her song "Do You Dream of Me". The opening set went to hometown favorite Tim Jackson, accompanied by Debra Windsong on blues harp. Dorian Michael added lead guitar for two songs as well.

The little tasting room of Bang the Drum was packed with listeners, and the patio was filled with people who might have been listening too. But there was a positive vibe the whole night, as we enjoyed a cool summer's evening and an excellent lineup of talent.

Paso Roblan Nick Brittan was second in the lineup, opening with a cover of Guy Clark's "Mud" and closing with an original Nick described as "crass", inspired by his old job at Hunter-Liggett. You might be surprised at how many things rhyme with Liggett. Nick's sweet-sounding guitar made it hard for him to be crass, just a little silly perhaps.

Newcomer David Trull offered free CDs, and introduced us to some of the originals from his 10-track collection. He's on tour from St. Louis (if you're reading this on Wed. June 22, catch him tonight 7-9pm at Linnaea's Cafe), so your host dubbed it his "St. Louis to San Luis Tour".

Jennifer Martin hushed the room with her nimble guitar instrumentals. She gave a Father's Day dedication to her composition "My Dad Jack", and afterwards asked the audience "could you hear the power tools in there?"

Lompoc's Matt Yaki also showed off some fine guitar work, as well as wry humor. "I was hungry when I wrote that," he said after one food-themed ballad. Then it was on to our featured act, soulful vocalist Ynana Rose, with Dorian Michael adding bluesy lead guitar to Ynana's folk strumming. Ynana debuted two new songs to close out her set, dedicating one to the community of songwriters she has found on our showcases.

You'll want to catch our next show at Bang the Drum, Tuesday July 19 features Damon Castillo with Reese Galido, Melody Klemin, J.B. Beverley, Zak Fennie, and Shelby Lanterman. All this and craft-beer too!

New Friday showcase at The Porch

June 3 was our first night in a new series of twice-monthly Friday showcases at The Porch Cafe in Santa Margarita.
Sarah & Byron of The PorchJohn Nowel added fiddle to showcase host Steve Key's opening set, two songs from the discography of the late great Guy Clark, "Old Friends" and "Come From the Heart."

The Porch has changed a little bit in the four years since we last did a showcase there. The wall separating the two storefronts has largely been removed, so that listeners can sit in the original storefront and watch our performance at a distance. Or they can sit a few feet away and enjoy every note. The music room has added stage lights, which allows us to turn off all the overhead fluorescents for a romantic touch. There is a piano in the stage area, but so far no one has tried it out.

Rob Kimball said his first Songwriters At Play showcase was at The Porch, back in our three-year run of Thursday nights (2009-12). He returned for the new Friday series debut, also adding a couple Guy Clark songs in his four-song set.

John Nowel kept the Guy Clark theme going with "Dublin Blues", and several originals. Showcase newcomer Trent Babb added a guest set, and then we closed out the night with featured act Jim Conroy (pictured here, below).Jim Conroy

Although he's played many of our events, this was Jim's debut at The Porch, and he turned heads, as cafe regulars wondered who was that guy with the booming baritone voice and dynamic stage presence. Jim told a very touching story about his 96-year-old mother's recent passing, and played several ballads from the "Live at D'Anbino" CD by his band, The Mystery Brothers.

Next show at the Porch on Friday June 15 features Luis Oliart, with his many guitars and various musical styles, plus Lauren Tannenbaum, PJ Robertson, and Amie Richie. Steve Key opens at 7pm.

Thanks to our generous venue hosts, Sarah and Byron (pictured here, above). Great to see old friends Marilyn, Sue, and other friendly faces in the crowd. Come back! Photos by Bonnie Nelson-Key. More photos are posted at  https://www.facebook.com/songwritersatplay/

Review of June 2, 2016 Shell Cafe

Our Third Anniversary at Shell Cafe in Pismo Beach ran overtime, with nine acts performing three and a half hours of music, celebrating with many of the fans who have supported us through three years of Thursday nights. Our loyal listeners included Rusty, Abby & Alice; Bob & Betty; Loretta, Jackie, Carl, Nancy, Larry, Shirley, Polly, Becky, and many more.

Your host Steve Key began the show with two songs he played 25 years in the songwriting competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival (he won). It was close to 10pm when Brian Hanratty wrapped up the show, singing his originals about surfing and dentistry.

Cellist Bob Liepman and violinist Sal Garza had played earlier in the evening at a string quartet show in Santa Maria, so they stopped by on the way home, providing orchestration for the Bob & Wendy set. Wendy played an electric guitar, which prompted the ghost of Pete Seeger to take an ax to the power cable, just as he did with Dylan at Newport.

Gadget guru Cliff Stepp plugged into a harmonizer effects pedal, which provided perfect vocal harmonies on every chorus. This impressed several of the performers, thinking they could hire one less singer for the next gig.

The lineup also included Jim Conroy, Randall Lamb, Holly Ann Lewis, Kristen Black, and Craig Louis Dingman. Thanks to all the performers, listeners, Shell Cafe owner Charlie Brunetti, the cafe staff. Special thanks to Madeline Royal of Love Live Music, our Thursday showcase co-producer, who introduced Songwriters At Play to Charlie. Let's do it again next Thursday June 9 featuring a full band up from L.A., Mick Rhodes and the Hard Eight, plus Hart Bothwell, Sofia & Hannah Lundgren, Nick Brittan, Susan Ritchie with Randy Rigby.
