Price: $10

Small PotatoesThey're back! Songwriters at Play presents folk festival favorites Small Potatoes, the Chicago-area duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. As one reviewer notes, “Behind the humble name hides a creative couple of singer-songwriters who know a thing or two about keeping a crowd laughing, smiling, and occasionally crying."  After 25 years, a million and a half miles and 3500 shows, Small Potatoes have become a “favorite act” by many coffeehouses, clubs and house concerts across the U.S. They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Festival, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. From the start, they’ve called themselves eclecto-maniacs and described their music as “Celtic to Cowboy”. They say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their four recordings, Alive!, Waltz of the Wallflowers, Time Flies and Raw demonstrate that “indecision” can be wonderfully entertaining. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. http://www.smallpotatoesmusic.com/

Matt CampbellMatt Campbell returns to our showcase, on the road from Nashville to share his latest full-length project, The Man With Everything. The critics are buzzing:

“Gather ’round, there, y’all people, for the story I will tell,” Matt Campbell begins, kicking off this country-fried combination of twang, Telecasters and train beats like some old-world folk hero. A former bar back at Robert’s Western World in downtown Nashville, Campbell has since graduated to playing gigs upon the venue’s iconic stage. “The Night I Found Jesus” doubles down on that experience, mixing Campbell’s tall-tale delivery with vintage songwriting built for dancehalls and honky-tonks." - Robert Crawford, Rolling Stone Country

"Matt Campbell has done a great job of mixing reminiscent with refreshing, and his take on country music in “The Man with Everything” is a must listen." - Caleb Long, Crank It Country

"Campbell's unique vocals weave an American story that is hopeful, authentic, and relatable." - Tara Joan, The Daily Country

Kenny FreemanBorn in Oklahoma and raised in the small town of Flint Texas, Kenny Freeman's music is a mixture of Red Dirt Country and Texas Blues. A third generation musician, Kenny was constantly surrounded by jam sessions comprised of his father, his uncle and their friends. At a young age he found Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He later discovered songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Lyle Lovett. After five years in Nashville touring extensively both as an acoustic act and with his full band, The Smokey Gringos, it was time for a change. This led to a journey across the Pacific and into the heart of Asia. What resulted was 15 months spent throughout Korea and Southeast Asia playing music, teaching English, and exploring the world. He's now based in Austin, TX. http://www.kennyfreemanmusic.com

To Wake YouTo Wake You is a collaboration between Denmark native Karoline Hausted and American Mark Davis. The songs on their EP, Beauty In The Smallest Things, were written while the duo lived miles apart. While there is contrast between the two writers - the expected feminine/masculine interplay, Hausted’s lilting Scandinavian folk influences meeting Davis’ rumbling folk-rock sensibilities - think The Swell Season with a dash of Radiohead. They now live on the Central Coast, and also perform in the band called Shadowlands. http://towakeyou.com

Morro Bay, CA 93442

Tai ShanSongwriters at Play presents an intimate concert with Tai Shan, Nashville-based pop-folk singer, composer, and songwriter. Her catchy, layered melodies echo John Mayer and Jack Johnson while her soprano soars somewhere between Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morrisette, and Adele. Her husband Austin Garrison adds trumpet, vocal harmonies and percussion.

As Tai Shan’s song says: “It’s cool to be weird.” There’s a good reason that the catchy ode to individuality was chosen as the anthem for the Girl Scouts of America’s Power Up Program. Tai is also known for her 50-plus songs inspired by works of literature — everything from Stephen King’s Carrie to Dr. Seuss — that span a wide range of themes and musical styles. A Cornish College of the Arts- trained classical and jazz composer, Tai has played up and down the West Coast (including several featured sets on our showcases) and at the iconic Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.
